After semi-cryptically teasing the arrival of private music at their recent gig at London, UK’s Crystal Palace Park, the revered alt-metal quintet have formally announced an album by the same name for an August release. For now, they’re previewing the record with an awesome lead single called “my mind is a mountain.”
The song was teased throughout the week on socials, with Deftones delivering a handful of posts where they overlayed esoteric phrases (“why do we bathe in this psyche”/“remain calm in our mental”) atop artistically-blurred shots of the band.
Earlier today (July 10th), “my mind is a mountain” was premiered on Apple Music. Host Zane Lowe also interviewed the band’s Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham and Frank Delgado at Hollywood, California’s Canter’s Deli to discuss their upcoming private music. Watch below.
As anticipated, Deftones’ latest album, which follows 2020’s Ohms, was made alongside producer Nick Raskulinecz. The group recorded the 11-song LP at various locations including Malibu and Joshua Tree, California, as well as Nashville, Tennessee. Last year, guitarist Carpenter explained that the new material “sounds like a continuation of Ohms and Koi [No Yokan].” Judging by “my mind is a mountain,” his description rings true.
private music is due out August 22nd via Reprise/Warner Music. That same day, Deftones will kick off a leg of North American tour dates at Vancouver, BC’s Rogers Arena.
The headlining tour finds the band joined by Phantogram, IDLES and Barbarians of California on select dates, though Deftones also splinter off from their own trip to support System Of A Down at a pair of gigs in Toronto, Ontario, in early September.
