Deafheaven guitarist Kerry McCoy recently told Revolver that “there is no ceiling” on his band’s artistic journey anymore, and sure enough, the blackgaze provocateurs blew the fucking roof off New York City’s Irving Plaza last night (May 14th) when they rolled through town as part of their ongoing Lonely People With Power tour.
The show took place a few weeks into their current North American tour and began with opening sets from heavy shoegaze explorers Trauma Ray and Arizona death-metal lifers Gatecreeper.
When it was time for the headliners to mount the stage, vocalist George Clarke and Co. hit Lonely People With Power’s moody “Incidental I” intro before launching into the dramatic black-metal, post-rock and shoegazing sounds of other new numbers including “Doberman,” “Heathen” and “Magnolia.”
Though the bulk of the 12-song set pulled from Deafheaven’s latest album, they also delivered big with heady Sunbather favorites “Dream House” and “Sunbather,” and also brought it back to 2015 by performing New Bermuda’s “Brought to the Water.”
