What’s better than a new Converge album? How about two new Converge albums?
The New England hardcore heroes had already staked a claim to 2026 with February’s acclaimed Love Is Not Enough LP. Now, they’ve revealed that there’s a follow-up full-length already waiting in the wings. It’s called Hum of Hurt, it’s due June 5th and according to vocalist Jacob Bannon, “it’s not a sequel.”
“When we came together to write, we ended up with a wealth of material,” he explains. “As work progressed we realized we had created two separate albums, and treated them as such.”
Originally, Converge had operated with the intention of making a noise-rock record, but Love Is Not Enough did not turn out as planned. Neither did Hum of Hurt, though it has more of the “spirit” of that early vision, Bannon says. “To me, it leans more into being an emotional hardcore album, while Love Is Not Enough feels more metal leaning album,” he asserts. “In the end, we simply gave creative birth to another Converge record with its own unique identity and character.”
The first taste of the new album is its title track, which represents a brutal bit of self-examination for the Converge vocalist. “These lyrics are me looking in a mirror, recognizing that I am not the man I want to be,” he says. “I need change, and still have work to do.”
As for the title itself, it’s a reference to the Earth’s hum. In characteristic Converge form, the band takes a particularly grim interpretation of the phenomenon. “What if ‘The Hum’ is the culmination of all the pain in the world, creating an audible signal across the universe?” Bannon suggests. “Something noticeable to others operating on a similar emotional plane.”
Bannon collaborated with renowned UK artist Thomas Hooper on the album artwork, which brings this dark vision of “The Hum” to life as an amalgamation of an EKG signal and “some kind of volatile seismography.”
