Last month, Connecticut metalcore unit Boundaries gave us one of the year’s heaviest songs yet through the release of their “awesomely pissed-off” and contemptuous “Skies cast amber black”. Today (April 24th), the band have announced the impending arrival of their fourth full-length, which is called Yearning: the unbeautiful after, and they’re doing so alongside the launch of a bombastically crushing song song called “Death will follow me.”
The song, which hit streamers earlier today and was also delivered via the music video up above, delivers multiple levels of intensity — staggeringly double-kicked and red-eyed Motö -death, cavernous and Subs-heavy breakdowns, dissonant kick-moshes and a heart-achingly half-sung chorus on processing grief (“If I can move on, will I ever find what’s lost?”). The track was inspired by the fatal 2025 plane crash that claimed the lives of music agent Dave Shapiro and former the Devil Wears Prada drummer Daniel Williams.
“This time last year was one of significant sorrow for this band and many others,” Boundaries vocalist Matthew McDougal explains, in regards to the origins of the song. “The tragic accident that took the lives of our friends so suddenly has since had us in a state of perpetual mourning.”
He adds that “life’s unforgivable violence is found throughout this newest album,” and notes that “Death will follow me” is a song that “merely begins to scratch the surface of this concept.”
Boundaries’ Yearning: the unbeautiful after was recorded last fall with producer Drew Fulk (Knocked Loose, Fit For a King). The 14-song effort, which follows 2024’s Death is a Little More, is said to find Boundaries at their “most punishing, deliberate, and focused.” Beyond the core quintet, it also features guest spots from The Plot In You’s Landon Tewers (“Crowned and crucified”) and Make Them Suffer (“Torn wide open”).
“With the record, we aimed to be uncompromising and really plant our flag,” McDougal adds. “As more time passes, heavy music continues to lose its teeth. This genre is supposed to be threatening; it should have an edge and make you feel something. We tried to create an album with urgency.”
The album is their first for new label home Sumerian Records. It arrives in full July 17th, though you can currently pre-order the collection on exclusive “Orange, Black and White: vinyl (limited to 200) in Revolver’s shop.
