The kings of crabcore are going country. Or at least that’s the game Attack Attack! seem to be playing at the moment through a series of socials posts suggesting founding drummer Andrew Wetzel is hitching his artistic vision to the C&W scene for an upcoming album release.
This all started late last week when Wetzel teased a forthcoming, second self-titled release from his long-running project, which he said marks “the beginning of a radical transformation.”
A short video post, in which the cowboy hat-wearing Wetzel is seen standing outside of a horse stable, has the drummer noting that he “lassoed in some brave new ideas” for the forthcoming release, and he rounded up some Nashville musicians to help him “tear through the fabric of metalcore and country music.”
The clip then teases a chicken-pickin’ barnburner called “Dance!,” which is set to hit streamers May 9th. You can hear the previews down below.
Making things stranger, another post over the weekend has Wetzel writing: “There has been some conflict internally surrounding my creative direction of Attack Attack! In the end, the other guys still support me and I’m looking forward to the future.” It’s unclear if this means the band are going through a major lineup change at the moment.
Additionally, Wetzel DJ’ed Hollywood, California’s Avalon club over the weekend for an “Emonite” event, where he spun A Static Lullaby’s heavy cover of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” while surrounded by influencers and leather chaps-and-Stetson-hat-sporting dancers.
Without hearing “Dance!” in full, it’s hard to say whether Attack Attack! are really going full-blown country or whether this could be some kind of I’m Not There-esque method acting/troll-job from Wetzel. Only time will tell!
