Revolver are celebrating Mastodon’s 25th anniversary with a new collector’s issue dedicated to the band. To help us salute the mighty Atlanta outfit, we reached out to a number of famous fans to get their picks for their favorite Mastodon song — including former Arch Enemy vocalist and current solo artist Alissa White-Gluz.
Like the rest of the metal community, Alissa White-Gluz was heartbroken to hear of the passing of Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds earlier this summer.
Also like many other headbangers, White-Gluz pored over the Mastodon catalog after the tragedy to reflect on the impeccable musicianship put on display throughout the years by Hinds and the rest of the band. One song she kept coming around to was “Quintessence,” a wide-journeying prog-metal standout off Mastodon’s landmark 2009 concept record, Crack the Skye.
“I want to say a big thank you to Brent and Mastodon for the amazing music over the years. Brent, thank you for your contribution and your talent,” she tells Revolver. “To all of Mastodon and Brent’s family and friends and fans: my deepest condolences on this horrible loss. I’m so happy we have this music so we can continue to celebrate Brent’s legacy and everything that he has contributed to our beloved metal scene.
“So with that, I would like to highlight one song in particular where I think that Brent really shines — and that song is ‘Quintessence.’ So if you haven’t heard it, please go check it out.”
