Here at Revolver, we’re always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it’s a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in deathcore, noise-rock, tech-death and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we’ve also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist.
GORE. – “Babylon”
Sometimes love doesn’t pan out the way you’d hoped. The emotions-tattered, djent-fracked first taste of GORE.’s forthcoming A Bud That Never Blooms EP has vocalist Haley Roughton reporting through a rollercoaster of growling lows and melodic highs that she’s accepting the death of a relationship, and ready to abandon a dream of holy matrimony (“You’ve taken everything from me but my name”).
“Babylon” is a heavy breakup anthem that proves that while you may want to walk the earth with someone — in this case, from Bethlehem to Babylon — sometimes you have to walk alone.
Seven Hours After Violet – “Radiance”
The second single from Shavo Odadjian’s new supergroup alongside members of Left to Suffer and Winds of Plague isn’t as relentlessly bruising as their deathcore-stomping “Paradise,” but there’s still plenty of power to their arena-ready heavy ballad “Radiance.”
The rolling, drone-noted bass line is pure Systems-grade Shavo. Taylor Barber brings bruised-plum sensitivity to his melodic croons in the verses, but then goes ultra-gross with his signature gutturals a bit later in the track.
A different glimpse of the upcoming S.H.A.V. full-length, shining another light on what we should expect when the album drops in full in October.
Nile – “Under the Curse of One God”
Ominously, Nile leader Karl Sanders growls out that “a dread epoch of darkness” is upon us on the near-perma-blasting front end of this standout from the tech-death greats’ just-dropped The Underworld Awaits Us All. That’s a pretty dire doomsday warning to come hurtling your way.
Then again, if his words are more of a metaphor for getting blanketed by his band’s mega-heavy assault — which eventually drops into a moody backend of ritualistic chanting and black-sand-kicking acoustic gloom — Nile devotees are no doubt more than willing to submit to these towering gods of mythological menace once again.
Chat Pile – “Masc”
Chat Pile are tapping into an existential, tragicomic gloom with their latest Cool World preview, a melancholic pounder that has them sounding more like a heavier, post-hardcore-edged Protomartyr than their usual noise-rock-driven attack. A dour, yet oddly danceable bass-and-drum groove propels “Masc,” but the anchor of the piece is the semi-sprechesang depressiveness of vocalist Raygun Busch.
While wholly self-flagellating (“I know I’m lower than scum”), the cut also probes at a confusing situational mindfuck where someone knows they’re the butt of the friend group’s joke, while still trying to piece out the punchline. Devastating in both tone and approach.
Within the Ruins – “Demon Killer”
Metalcore comics fans Within the Ruins combed the back-issue bins to find the plotlines for their forthcoming Phenomena II full-length, with “Demon Killer,” in particular, rooted in the occult lore behind Vertigo antihero John Constantine. Fittingly, the band are hellblazin’ through a series of heavy-ass breakdowns, while vocalist Steve Tinnon spits pure fire and drops easter eggs on Constantine’s time as a punk rocker with a flair for the dark arts.
Keeping things in continuity, guitarist Joe Cocchi further refines the tremolo-glitched harmonic approach he developed for the original Phenomena, back in 2014.
Carcosa – “Righteous Man”
Now this is a tasty single. Vancouver deathcore group Carcosa’s new, Pulp Fiction-referencing “Righteous Man” hits like a straight shot of adrenaline to the heart, with cinephilic vocalist Johnny Ciardullo and guitarist Andrew Baena both injecting the precision-kicked, crunchily riffed-out single with a series of Tarantino-mining plot points, as the full band cosplay their way through various iconic movie moments in the video.
Bound to that make you crowdkill the pit with your finest Vincent Vega dance moves, “Righteous Man” is a Big Kahuna banger from these British Columbia goofballs.
