Here at Revolver, we’re always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it’s a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in OSDM, metalcore, hardcore and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we’ve also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist.
Lilith – “Poisoned Apple”
Though Cagayan de Or, Philippines, quintet Lilith have been drilling out strong, mid ‘00s metalcore vibes for a few years now, there’s extra bite to the group’s new “Poisoned Apple” single.
The horns-raising track is spectacularly heavy on melo speediness, precision-picked riffage, and Nicole Pistolante’s max-fury screech. Then again, the subtler, creepy-toned keyboard bursts give “Poisoned Apple” a woozy feeling — not unlike swallowing the arsenic-laced seeds of an orchard’s worth of Honeycrisps.
Laceration – “Strangled by Hate”
There’s a lot to love with “Strangled by Hate.” For one, Santa Rosa, California wrecking crew Laceration have apparently upped their death-thrash game for their forthcoming I Erode album, which also marks the long-running group’s debut release through 20 Buck Spin.
The first tease from the LP leans into hurricane-grade blasts and sarin-spiked technical fretboard acridity that’s got us gasping for air. Then there’s Donnie Smalls’ discombobulating, dark-and-wonky, Jackson-whammying lead section — pure madness.
Hold My Own – “So True to My Own”
There’s a wickedly streamlined heaviness jackhammering out of Hold My Own’s guests-loaded new Da Trifecta EP, especially on standout bruiser “So True to My Own.” It’s a mid-tempo-mashed anthem where vocalist Greg Falchetto gravel-growls plain-as-day about how he’s keepin’ it real, 24/7. ‘Nuff said.
Then again, we’ve also got a meta-referential guest spot from SPEED singer Jem Siow (“Going faster than you… I speed right past you”) in the double-time mid-section, while Disgrace vocalist (and Twitching Tongues guitarist) Taylor Young becomes the third hydra head to spit some hardcore honesty on the track.
Calva Louise – “La Corriente”
“La Corriente” is U.K. trio Calva Louise’s second electro-spiked, retro-futuristic banger of the year, though it crunches just a touch heavier than their April-released “Under the Skin.”
That’s in part due to swapping out the earlier single’s classical piano flurries in favor of a more furiously groove-swerved, post-PM5K nu-dustrial aesthetic. Likewise, guitarist-vocalist Jess Allanic’s seething, Spanish language take down of an ass-kissing social vampire truly comes in for the kill.
Silent Theory – “Made Me This Way”
Silent Theory are best known for hooky, rock-radio-friendly anthems like “Fragile Minds” and “Emptiness in You,” but the Idaho veterans lean into their heavier side on new single “Made Me This Way.”
The main riff brings to mind the breakdown to Pantera’s “Domination” by way of Fear Factory, while vocalist Dakota Jerns delivers an acrobatic performance, swerving from chopper-rap-ish verses to an infectious Linkin Park-esque chorus to low deathcore gutturals.
Lowen – “The Seed That Dreamed of Its Own Creation”
Helmed by vocalist Nina Saeidi, who was born in exile from her homeland of Iran, U.K.-based Middle-Eastern metal band Lowen dive into heady depths on their latest single.
The doomy song is completely sung in the Iranian language of Farsi and tells the story of a mythological serpent tyrant who is overthrown. But it also relates to Iranian women’s continuing fight against gender apartheid through the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement.
As such, Saeidi leads the way, incorporating traditional Tahrir vocals to powerful effect.
