The members of Florida death-metal extremists Deicide have suggested in retrospect that their third album slowed things down a touch, compared to the super-Satanic, blast-manic bedlam of their earlier full-lengths. Keep in mind, that’s a relative self-critique — 1995’s Once Upon the Cross is nevertheless a frenzied, fearless and awe-inspiring display of OSDM intensity. The band needled into paranoia spirals of brutal guitar work, and pushed the needle between hi-speed snare attacks and ground-pounded grooves. Profane as ever, bassist Glen Benton spoke his mind on religious hypocrisy and spiritual subversion. Take a bite of Deicide’s heavy communion, and pick up their ‘Cross’ on limited “milky clear with blood splatter” vinyl.
