Last year, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and eight-time Grammy winning producer Greg Kurstin celebrated the Jewish Festival of Lights with a series they dubbed Hanukah Sessions, in which they covered eight songs by prominent Jewish artists — from Bob Dylan to the Beastie Boys. This year, they’re doing it again, and to kick off the first night of Hanukah on November 28th, the pair shared a metal-as-fuck cover of Lisa Loeb’s gold-certified folk-pop hit, “Stay.”
Loeb’s version of the 1994 song that’s famous for soundtracking the film Reality Bites is a soft and supple tune, and Grohl and Kurstin’s rendition starts out that way before it suddenly explodes into death-metal madness during the hook — blood-curdling screams, iron-clad chugs, blast beats and all. From there, Grohl’s singing shifts between piercing shrieks and falsetto croons while the instrumentation swirls into a violent storm of subtly catchy black-metal fury.
It’s a total riot, and it comes paired with a parody of Loeb’s original video that sees Grohl wandering around a building in a Betsey Johnson dress. Watch the equally hilarious and heavy production above via YouTube.
