TOMAS LINDBERG, AT THE GATES vocalist, dead at 52

Tomas Lindberg, the vocalist of Swedish melodic death-metal pioneers At the Gates, has died. He was 52.

His death comes just weeks after At the Gates revealed that he had been battling Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare form of oral cancer, since late 2023. They also announced a new album featuring Lindberg, who had recorded his vocals shortly before getting major mouth surgery. In May, following an unspecified setback, he was placed into longterm care.

As the frontman of ATG, Lindberg helped spearhead Gothenburg-style melodic death metal, releasing trailblazing albums including 1995’s genre-defining Slaughter of the Soul, a foundational influence on American metalcore groups like Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red and Darkest Hour. A prolific musician, Lindberg also performed with a wide range of other bands such as Disfear, Lock Up, Skitsystem, the Crown and Nightrage. Outside of music, he worked as a social studies teacher.

We send our heartfelt condolences to his friends, family and fans. RIP.
