Just in time for Halloween, self-proclaimed “Baphometal” duo the Burned Over have channeled the spirit of Boney M. on a metallic revamp of the latter’s Seventies-era signature single, “Rasputin.”
The cover follows the Burned Over’s 2025 full-length The Last Great Awakening, and finds vocalist and ex-GWAR member Kym Dylla (formerly known as Vulvatron) and producer Mark Dannells reimagining Boney M.’s Euro-disco number as a hard-thudding, double-kicking and guitars-blazing effort.
In addition to the Burned Over’s core duo, the cover features drumming from Withered’s Beau Brandon and additional vocals from former My Dying Bride member Aaron Stainthorpe. The vocalists entwine to sing about the rise and fall of the tune’s titular power-hungry figure — known to some as the manipulative mad monk, and to others as Russia’s greatest “love machine.”
“I’ve always thought this song would easily translate into a metal version,” Dannells commented, adding of the lyrics, “The story of Rasputin’s sinister influence over the Romanovs, paired with the song’s vocal interplay, was perfect for balancing Aaron’s harsh delivery with Kim’s melodic counterpoint.”
A music video by Hey Beautiful Jerk (Mastodon, Ozzy Osbourne) merges historical and occult themes through vivid, horrific animation that Dannells says taps into a “surreal, Lovecraft-meets-Ralph Bakshi aesthetic.” You can see for yourself up above.
