Drone-lords sunn O))) have returned, and they’re now signed to Sub Pop. Just this morning (October 14th), the long-running duo announced that they’ve partnered with the iconic Seattle imprint to deliver a new, three-song maxi 12-inch.
The three epically tone-blown tracks — “Eternity’s Pillars,” “Raise the Chalice” and “Reverential” — are already streaming on DSPs, and will soon be available on vinyl. It’s noted in a press release that the songs were written and performed by robed founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, and it’s added that the heavy triumvirate marks the first official sunn recordings to “feature only the original core duo on heavily saturated electric guitars and synthesis.”
The tunes were recorded between Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington and Los Angeles, California’s Sea Grass facility alongside producer Brad Wood.
They revealed that “Eternity’s Pillar” is named after an old Eighties-era TV program hosted by jazzist Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, which explored the correlation between music and “spiritual transcendence.” “Raise the Chalice” was inspired by late Washington musician Ron Guardipee, who’d performed in hardcore band Brotherhood with Anderson at the turn of the Nineties.
“sunn O))) gave extreme focus and care to each step and aspect of the recording, each tone and level of saturation, each gain stage and speaker, each arrangement and harmonic,” they added of the recordings in a joint statement, noting of the elemental vibes contained therewithin, “The Pacific Northwest forest is our guide.”
You can stream all three songs via the player up above, while the songs are also up on DSPs. Both Sub Pop and sunn O)) are offering up pre-orders for limited color vinyl variants, while a standard vinyl edition is expected to drop in 2026.
