The gods of drone are back, and it’s glorious.
Following Sunn O)))’s recent surprise EP for new label home Sub Pop, the fuzz-blown tone merchants have now unveiled plans for their first full-length release through the iconic imprint. It’ll be self-titled, and they’re teasing it up front with the distortion-blasted “Glory Black.”
A press release explains that band members Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley’s next full-length — which follows their 2019 two-fer, Life Metal and Pyroclasts — was co-produced and mixed alongside Brad Wood (Hum, Tar, Sunny Day Real Estate, Liz Phair). The six-song release was recorded at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington, last January.
“The vast tracking room had big windows looking out on trees,” O’Malley recalled in a statement of the scenic backdrop. “We could go hiking and be out in the woods, spend time outdoors. That became a big part of it.”
The first elemental preview is closing cut “Glory Black.” Its lead riff takes on an optimistically-melodied, but still devastatingly distortion-searing approach, but the song also flirts with distantly-decaying piano ambiance in the mid-section. While a series of Sunn O))) albums thrived on collaborations with the likes of Mayhem’s Attila Csihar, composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, late popsmith-turned experimental singer-songwriter Scott Walker and more, the band’s new self-titled release was purpose-built to thrive “in the primal territory of the duo format,” this being reflective of Sunn’s live show.
“What’s been happening with our performances over the last couple years with the two of us and no other collaborators has been really fresh and exciting,” confirms Anderson.
Accordingly, Sunn O))) have also announced a short run of North American tour dates. You’ll find the concert info, along with Sunn O)))’s tracklisting and cover art, down below. The album is out April 3rd, while concert tickets are on sale this Friday (January 16th).
Late last year, Sunn O))) celebrated their Sub Pop signing by issuing a three-song EP featuring new tunes “Eternity’s Pillars,” “Raise the Chalice” and “Reverential.” You can pick up a copy of the record on red vinyl in Revolver’s shop.
