Dopesmokin’ stoner legends Sleep have announced their first full-length release with their new lineup. Following the recent reveal of their Matt Pike-less “Have Spacesuit Will Travel” single, the re-envisioned trio have announced they’ll venture towards new Hempishpheres via an punnily-titled album of the same name.
The album arrives on streamers September 3rd via Jack White’s Third Man Records, and will then be given a physical release on October 30th. To mark today’s (August 5th) announcement, the band have blasted off another single called “The Morrisist”. You can check out it’s dank, dirging groove via the player up above.
As previously reported, Sleep re-emerged last month with news that founding riff-slinger Matt Pike (also of High on Fire) was no longer with the band. The current lineup surrounds OG bass-lord Al Cisneros with Melvins drummer Dale Crover and Bubba Dupree, guitarist for first-wave DC hardcore group Void — a press release notes that the cult hardcore guitarist’s recruitment “is a pick that is not only completely mind-blowing, but a choice no one would have seen coming.”
The group’s forthcoming, 5-song Hempispheres — the first Sleep album since 2018’s The Sciences — includes both “Have Spacesuit Will Travel” and “The Morrisist.” More details on the physical release are impending.
The album is also being released in conjunction with a Sleep-themed comic book series — inspired by Sleep’s lyrics and written by Cisneros, himself. The saga takes place on the “riff-filled land” of Planet Iommia. The first issue is being illustrated by Dave Kloc and Arik Roper. It’s available for purchase in both a special and standard edition via Third Man Books.
Sleep are likewise touring this year, with their next roadtrip kicking off September 8th at the Observatory in San Diego, California. You’ll find the full route beneath Hempispheres’ cover art and tracklisting.
