Sex Dolls and Circle Pits: Godflesh, Wormrot, More at Maryland Deathfest

As Sunday (May 27th) and the final day of MDF arrived, brutal rainstorms and flash flooding hit Maryland, but the spirits of the Party Brigade lived on at the festival’s Soundstage. Singapore’s Wormrot spoke movingly about the challenges of touring and even being a band from their home country, and the crowd response to them was passionate, with wild moshing, stage diving and plenty of inflatable sex dolls and costumes in the mix. Earlier in the day, Bandit put on a surprising and rousing set, coming out decked in all Adidas, head to toe, and proceeding to flip out, their frontman leaping into the audience on the first note of the first song and starting a circle pit all by himself. They kept the energy up, too — smashing microphones, ripping off Adidas clothing to reveal more Adidas underneath. By the end of Bandit’s set, the singer was rolling around covered in his blood and the drum kit was scattered.

Featuring these sets plus appearances by Viscera Infest, Arkhon Infaustus, Evoken, Neolithic, Violation Wound (with Chris of Autopsy), Pulmonary, Opera IX, as well as headlining sets by Enemy Soil and Godflesh, the final day at Maryland Deathfest was a wild one. Enemy Soil’s appearance was one of the band’s first since the group, which includes members of Pig Destroyer and Agoraphoabic Nosebleed, reformed in the past year.
