The long-awaited and undoubtedly hilarious Spinal Tap II: The End Continues mockumentary won’t be hitting movie theatres until mid-September, but filmmaker Martin Di Bergi (or, rather, actual filmmaker Rob Reiner) is whetting our appetites for this latest rock and roll creation by unveiling a killer concert performance of “Stonehenge” featuring UK pop royal Elton John on lead vocals.
The scene, pulled from the upcoming feature, finds Tap all robed out for their epic and druidic bang out, with guitarist-vocalist Nigel Tufnel (a.k.a. Christopher Guest) delivering that moody spoken word intro about the mystical English landmark. Then John and his piano rise from beneath the stage, and the glitter-bespectacled icon handles the rest of the lead vocals, as Tufnel chops away at his Union Jack-ed Ernie Ball offset.
It’s a direct performance vid, intercut with scenes from the original This is Spinal Tap movie from 1984, though the big gag may be that some forty years later, Tap have finallly figured out the right dimensions for their stony, salutary stage prop. And it’s impressively massive.
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues hits screens September 12th, which is also the same day the soundtrack arrives in stores and on streamers. The 13-track OST includes new original songs, as well as re-envisioned Tap-lore classics with Paul McCartney (“Cups and Cakes”) and country artists Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood (“Big Bottom”).
