Sanguisugabogg are back, and they’re more grotesque than ever before. The Ohio death-metal mavens have announced a new album titled Hideous Aftermath is on the way, but they’ve served up an early taste via homicidal first single “Abhorrent Contraception.”
A press release explains that Sanguisugabogg’s third album continues the group’s “gore-obsessed” direction, though vocalist Devin Swank said that it’s likewise “Our most death metal record, our most personal record, our most focused and brutal record to date.”
“Abhorrent Contraception” features a touch of caveman riffage, but the track is likewise a multi-part monstrosity full of hyper-exaggerated blasts, pinched-and-punishing riffs, tech-judded severity and slow-cooked grooves meatier than a summer BBQ. The song also features a guest appearance from Defeated Sanity’s Joshn Welshman.
The video, meanwhile, initially conjures the unsettlingly skewed suburban malaise, cloudgazing aesthetic and Dutch tilts of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” video — at least until a housewife pushed to the edge preps a poisonous meal for an ungrateful family. And then the vomit starts spewing and the axes start a-choppin’.
“As a death metal band diving deep in dark tropes of fantasy and exaggerated real life horrors, this song is a timeless classic with a theme very tried and true with our genre and it’s about the slaughter of an entire family and the unborn,” the group confirmed in a joint statement.
Hideous Aftermath, which follows 2023’s Homicidal Ecstasy, was recorded with producer/Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou this spring at his God City Studios in Salem, Massachusetts. The album also features guest appearances from members of Nails, Peeling Flesh, Full of Hell and Cattle Decapitation.
