Earlier this year, prolific Nine Inch Nails collaborators Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross teased a litany of forthcoming projects, including soundtrack work and new music from NIN. Now, it turns out those two areas, in particular, will converge on the big screen, with the iconic industrial outfit set to deliver the score to upcoming sci-fi flick TRON: Ares.
The news of Nine Inch Nails joining the Disney film franchise was announced last Friday (August 9th) during the company’s D23 expo in Anaheim, California. Not much else is known behind the score at the moment, but the third installment in the sci-fi series is set to hit theaters in October of 2025.
For their part, NIN teased the upcoming score with a social post that simply read “You’re going to get what you deserve,” this obviously referencing a key line to the band’s signature “Head Like a Hole” single from 1989’s Pretty Hate Machine.
Reznor’s longtime project takes the scoring reins from French electronic duo Daft Punk, who had helmed the audio for Tron: Legacy in 2010. Over the years, Reznor and Ross have partnered up for a staggering series of film scores, including this year’s Challengers and their Academy Award-winning work on The Social Network.
Back in the spring, Reznor and Ross explained in an interview with GQ that they were gearing up to launch their With Teeth multimedia company, which would focus on “storytelling in multiple disciplines: film production, fashion, a music festival, and a venture with Epic Games.”
When asked in that interview about the prospect of new NIN music, Reznor noted that outside soundtrack work “managed to make Nine Inch Nails feel way more exciting than it had been in the past few years.” Ross added that they felt “excited about starting on the next record.”
Nine Inch Nails’ last full-length studio efforts were 2020’s Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts.
