Prom season is over for most, save Arcadea — the synth-heavy side-project from Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor and Zruda guitarist Core Atoms. The group have returned from the cosmos to deliver a new album titled The Exodus of Gravity, and they’re promoting it with an intergalactic prom vid for first single “Fuzzy Planet.”
The single thrusts Dailor behind the mic to glide sweet melodies above oscillating synth patterns from Atoms and new Arcadea member João Nogueira. In the vid, Dailor’s presented as a futuristic clown crooner singing to a bunch of teens at an event dubbed “Prom 5039: A Nightmare to Remember.”
As you’ll see up above, some space-werewolf spikes the punch. It sets off a puke-a-rama. A janitor starts air-guitaring wildly during clean-up. Other space teens fall in love. The band continue, unabated.
“It’s about that first fuzzy feeling you get when you fall in love,” Atoms said in a statement of . “Our lead character is recognizing that the spore has gotten in them and they’re starting to change. They’re awakening to all the beauty that’s around.”
“There’s something really hopeful and uplifting about it from a musical aesthetic,” Dailor added of the track. “The object was to get a little more dancey and a little more fun. As much as we liked how proggy the last Arcadea album was, it reminded me of what I already do in Mastodon. We wanted to explore the idea of doing something different. So, I wanted to really concentrate on groove and dance and embracing the electronic aspect of it.”
As for the rest of The Exodus of Gravity, the 12-song release is being teased as “a futuristic synth-rock odyssey [which] unfolds in a world where gravity no longer holds us down and emotion rise in its place.” The album was self-produced by Arcadea, though engineered by Tom Tapley. It was recorded at Atlanta, Georgia’s West End Sound facility.
