Last Friday (February 7th), Slayer icon Kerry King took his first-ever solo headline tour to New York City’s Irving Plaza for an evening of incendiary thrash metal.
Māori groove-metal rising stars Alien Weaponry opened the show with a Haka and plenty of headbanging, while crossover party animals Municipal Waste kept necks snapping and spirits high. Still, despite the high-energy support acts, the night belonged to King and his all-star band: Death Angel screecher Mark Osegueda, former Machine Head and Vio-Lence guitarist Phil Demmel, Hellyeah bassist Kyle Sanders and Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph.
Their 19-song set (which you can see below courtesy of Setlist.fm) spanned King’s career, from the primal evil of early Slayer classic “At Dawn They Sleep” to highlights off the guitarist’s debut solo album, 2024’s From Hell I Rise. Throwing back even further, King and his supergroup paid tribute to one of his most formative influences, playing not one but two Iron Maiden covers.
