While cyber-pop solo artist Izzy Reign is a day away from unleashing her self-titled debut album, she’s now teamed up with Revolver to premiere a video for the album’s djent-bruised accountability anthem, “Bird of Prey.”
Reign explains in a statement that she wrote “Bird of Prey” from “the viewpoint of the villain’s Villain,” with a press release adding that the song is sung by an antihero “who doesn’t shy away from confronting harmful people head-on.”
The song flirts with elements of modern metalcore melodicism, while also exploring trap-world beatscaping. Reign’s vocal performance runs from about-to-pounce whisperings towards a fully-enraged scream, all of which encompassing an actions-and-consequences style narrative (“You play with fire, well I bathe in gasoline”). The artist adds that there’s a “powerful yet semi-cynical vibe” to her lyrics.
“I grew up with the standard of a zero tolerance for crappy people — if I saw someone causing harm, I would cause said person double the amount,” Reign notes. “I made it clear that I would never be the cause, but always the result. Is it the best way to go about things? Probably not, but sometimes, a necessary evil is a good thing.”
She continues: “I encourage people to always stand up for those who do not have a voice of their own and hold them accountable. Always have and always will. Sometimes, the right thing to do, is to make it your problem.”
The big booming track — which is a good fit for fans of Poppy, Spiritbox and Bring Me the Horizon — has also been paired with a music video that finds Reign prowling around menacingly, while also showing off some choreography with her backup dancers.
