Underoath have been plenty busy of late while tackling two sets a night during their They’re Only Chasing Safety 20th anniversary tour, but the veteran post-hardcore group have revealed that they were also able to squeeze in a video shoot while out on the road this month. The clip in question celebrates the band’s newest single, a hard-swung and emotionally heavy piece titled “Survivors Guilt.”
The track kicks off with a seasick and Botch-ish, digi-processed metalcore riff warping through the speakers alongside drummer Aaron Gillespie’s dexterous rumble, but the song soon locks into an anthemic and glammy rhythm. Gillespie and vocalist Spencer Chamberlain once again take turns on the mic, with the latter explaining that the tune was deeply inspired by his challenges with substance abuse and the conflicting emotions of continuing his journey through sobriety when other friends weren’t as lucky.
“I feel this heavy guilt about making it out alive when so many of my friends didn’t,” Chamberlain explained in a statement. “There have been many times during my recovery when I’ve felt guilty, and that’s a mindfuck in itself, but it’s a real feeling. The opening line explains it pretty bluntly. I’ve been off drugs for seven years, and I’ve lost eight friends in 2023 alone to the same demon I was entangled with.”
He added: “It’s a heavy feeling to bear because it’s not like you’re better than anyone else out there — you literally just got lucky. I got my shit together before it was too late and I’m grateful for every single day I wake up now, especially because there was a time when I wasn’t sure I would.”
You can check out the new song up above along with its music video, which was conceived, filmed and edited in a 48 hour span during the group’s current tour. Shot out in Denver, Colorado, it finds the band rocking a rustic-looking restaurant, while Gillespie also put on a coat of greasepaint to clown around on the drums from the back of a moving pickup truck.
Though the details have yet to arrive in full, the song is the latest tease from Underoath’s next full-length, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2025 via MNRK Heavy.
Underoath are performing this weekend at the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas, while the They’re Only Chasing Safety anniversary tour — which finds the act performing the 2004 album in full, as well as a second set of songs chosen by their fans — picks back up again on Tuesday (October 22nd) in Santa Ana, California.
