Having already treated noise-rock fans to their Rack reunion LP earlier this fall, the Jesus Lizard have now unveiled an extra from the sessions called “Cost of Living.”
The new track, which hadn’t made the LP but is streaming as of today (November 14th) via label home Ipecac Records, hits a few hallmarks of the Jesus Lizard sound. It’s eerily, uncannily jazz up front, with Duane Denison’s sparkle-coated guitar chords chiming through the mix like a morning bluebird. But then the full band lock into a jagged groove as vocalist David Yow starts up a nervously slurring yowl.
“Simply because I wrote the words to ‘Cost of Living’ doesn’t mean that I know exactly what it’s about,” the singer said in a statement. “I think it has to do with the dread and self-loathing that addicts experience on a very regular basis. You can pick whichever type of addict you choose.”
Of the song’s arrangement, Denison added: “A friend asked me if we had any tricked-out, odd timing type things with twists and turns, and I said ‘Yeah, I think so….’”
As previously reported, the Jesus Lizard’s Rack is the band’s first album since 1998’s Blue, and it features the classic lineup of Yow, Denison, bassist David Wm. Sims and drummer Mac McNeilly.
They begin touring the release this December, with shows hitting various parts of North America and Europe between now and next spring. You’ll find the date details below.
