Chaos-driven mathcore fusionists the Callous Daoboys are back with a double-feature preview of their newly-announced next full-length, I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven. Specifically, the Atlanta, Georgia sextet have just premiered a cinematic, lore-building music video for two drastically-different sounding songs: “Two-Headed Trout” and “The Demon of Unreality Limping Like A Dog.”
Working in extremes as always, the band first serve up “Two-Headed Trout,” which finds vocalist Carson Pace working through the croonier side of his singing voice amid a straightforward-but-sinisterly-bouncing twist on modern pop-rock.
Next up is “The Demon of Unreality Limping Like A Dog,” which ratchets into more metallic-and-bruising riffage and sports neck vein-bulging screams from Pace, but likewise drops into a tabla-drum breakdown and features a miniature electronic freakout.
“These two pieces do not represent a thesis or mission statement of [I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven], but rather two extremities,” Pace offers in a statement of their newly-launched diptych. “If you’re a fan of us being a rock band, I have good news for you. If you’re a fan of us being a chaotic metalcore band, I have GREAT news for you. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Enjoy.”
You can check out both tracks via the nearly 11-minute music video up above, which finds Pace hitting a talk show while the rest of the band plots an artistic heist. It arguably enters Joker-fied territory mid-video, and concludes with an on-air beatdown.
I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven follows the band’s God Smiles Upon The Callous Daoboys EP from 2023, but it is likewise their first full-length release since 2022’s Celebrity Therapist.
While earlier Daoboys releases had Pace hitting political themes, he suggests that the upcoming 13-song release—which the band are calling a “museum of failure”— instead sports lyrics that are “very singular and personal.”
“I’m not making an album commenting on anything societal or political this time, this is an album just for me,” he said. “It’s every emotion I’ve felt and sobering thought since 2021. I can only make this album now, not in three years when I’m thirty, not ten years ago when I was seventeen. This is the snapshot of 24-27. A scrapbook of trial and error, or better yet, a Museum of Failure.”
I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven is out May 16th via MNRK Heavy. An exclusive variant of the double LP on slabs of “Calf” neon coral, black, and white-colored vinyl, limited to 250 copies, is available for pre-order now in Revolver’s shop.
