Western-metal faction SpiritWorld are plunging us even deeper into the horror-themed pits of their impending Helldorado LP. And this time, bandleader Stu Folsom tapped Rise Against guitarist Zach Blair and Blackbraid‘s Sgah’gahsowáh to help him convey the sound of the apocalypse. Together, they’ve shared a thrashed-and-mashed ripper fittingly titled “Oblivion.”
The latest single from the group’s third album takes a much less twangin’ approach than last month’s heavy-but-honky-tonkin’ “Abilene Grime.”
Instead, the tune traffics in a hellacious bonfire of blitzkrieg-ing thrash beats, brass-knuckled crossover riffs and hearty howls from Folsom about the wrath of the demons clingin’ tight to his back. Later, Blair rips into his fretboard for a way-down-South shred solo, while Sgah’gahsowáh adds fierce screams to the soul-damning song.
Folsom described the track as one of his favorites from the Helldorado sessions, but also notes that it “was the song that took the most work to finish.
“I am so glad that I kept pulling it back out of the dumpster to chip away at,” he explained in a statement. “It has a great mid-tempo headbanger groove that reminds me of growing up listening to early Obituary/Six Feet Under records full of Alan West riffage in my headphones, walking home from my graveyard shift selling booze and tampons at a 24/7 SAV-ON in East Las Vegas.”
As previously reported, Helldorado marks the third part in a trilogy that began with 2020’s Pagan Rhythms and continued through 2022’s DEATHWESTERN. The new record’s narrative continues to follow a group of outlaws and misfits as they battle monsters deep in the desert.
