Coming off the recent release of Orthodox’s Comeback Kid-assisted “Commit to Consequence” single, the Tennessee straight-edge heavyweights have flat-out murdered us with a lethal new metalcore single called “Searching for a Pulse.”
The new song arrives just as Orthodox have announced their next full-length, A Door Left Open. They welcome us into this latest track through an introductory barrage of mega-chunked, super-ignorant mosh riffs, but also contort themselves through pulse-quickened breaks, fast-and-furious hardcore beats, and a monstrously shred-bombed solo from guitarist Ben Touchberry.
There’s also a beep-bloop-heavy pre-breakdown segue that sounds like someone brought a battery acid-leaking Texas Instruments Speak & Spell into the recording sessions.
Vocalist Adam Easterling, meanwhile, is “screaming for help” over the “burning nightmare” that’s throwing him through convulsions and putting his unconscious body through bone-crumbling trauma.
“This is about a reoccurring dream I would get every time we left for tour that my house was burning down and I couldn’t make it home in time to save it,” he explained in a statement. “I tried to write something that encapsulates an overall fear and eventual submission to being powerless.”
As for the rest of A Door Left Open, the record will include the aforementioned “Commit to Consequence” with Comeback Kid’s Andrew Neufeld, and will also feature guest apperances form Mastodon’s Brann Dailor (“One Less Body”) and Boundaries’ Matt McDougal (“Blend In With the Weak”.
