Kittie have marked the silver anniversary of their debut album, 2000’s Spit, with a reimagined take on the record’s iconically nu-bruising title track.
The Canadian quartet unveiled their updated version, titled “Spit XXV,” along with a new music video produced by Wombat Fire. This was teased earlier today (August 19th) on Instagram with footage of Kittie’s founding sisters, Morgan and Mercedes Lander, hitting the chromatically-crushed and detuned nu-metal track alongside longtime but post-Spit members Tara McLeod (guitars) and Ivy Jenkins (bassist).
In addition to the performance shots, the video also features naturalistic outdoors footage, a mess of bird feathers, some on-theme blood-spitting, and the sight of Kittie running through the woods — the latter visual giving off strong “Charlotte” vibes. Watch and listen in full above.
In the week leading up to the premiere, Kittie hinted that something was coming through various throwback posts showcasing photos and videos from the Spit era, along with suggestive captions like “Spitting image of the past” and “Everything old is new again.”
Shortly after the video premiere for “Spit XXV,” the band confirmed plans to put out the four-song Spit XXV, which adds remakes of debut single “Brackish,” “Charlotte” and “Do You Think I’m a Whore.” The EP reteams the band with producer Garth Richardson, who had been behind the boards on the original album, which they’d recorded together in 1999.
“It’s hard to believe that 25 years after its release, and almost 30 years since Kittie began, people are still talking about Spit,” Morgan Lander said in a statement. “There is something truly unexplainable in why our debut album is still resonating with people, finding a new audience and has had such a lasting impact on so many.
“Reimagining some of these classic songs for the 25th anniversary of Spit was a lot of fun and a true testament to their longevity. It reveals just how relevant in the musical landscape they still are today. We were honored to work with Garth again where it all began after more than two decades, and doing so was a cool way to pay homage to the past while updating these songs with a modern sound, bringing them into the future.”
Kittie’s Spit XXV EP is out September 19th via Sumerian Records, and can be pre-ordered here. The band released their last album, Fire — their first in 13 years — in 2024.
They’re also set to play the Louder Than Life and Aftershock festivals in September and October, respectively, as well as 2026’s ShipRocked Cruise.
