Following his recent exit from the drummer spot in Suicidal Tendencies, multi-instrumentalist Jay Weinberg is back to plugging his developing, collaborative singles series. His second preview for an upcoming, to-be-detailed fuller project pits him head-to-head with bloodraving Code Orange offshoot NOWHERE2RUN — and their “Drone Operator” gets pretty hardcore.
Weinberg began teasing his collaboration with Jami Morgan and Shade Balderose at the tail end of February, posting a soft-focus portrait of the three palling around in a grimy elevator over on Instagram, along with the insidiously cryptic caption: “fears decide, the phantom mind won’t survive serving a jealous god with a bottom line.”
Now, a new music video for “Drone Operator” rocket-launches the trio into a rapid-fire assault of speed-forward, barb-wire-laced hardcore that plays more to the Orange-hewed side of Morgan and Balderose’s resume — the former delivering terror-stricken, vein-popping cries (“I’m out of time, and I can’t hide from the Unseen Eye”) as the latter rips into chromatic chunkery and noise-popped harmonics. Weinberg whips up fatalistic beats across multiple tempos, as well as contributing guitar, bass and vocals to the track.
“It was an honor to work with my brothers NOWHERE2RUN — two of the most creative people and dedicated artists I’ve ever known,” Weinberg shared in a separate Instagram post earlier this week, adding that he was “very excited to share this one” with you” with fans.
Longtime Mastodon visual artist Paul Romano notably created the artwork for the single, which can be viewed below.
As previously reported, Weinberg kicked off his eponymous solo era last November with the release of “Sandstone,” a blackgazing collaboration with Deafheaven vocalist George Clarke.
Details are pending on the totality of Weinberg’s self-described “growing series of collaborations,” but stay tuned here as Revolver will launch an exclusive vinyl preorder for the first two songs next week.
