Onetime Slipknot skinsman and current Suicidal Tendencies drummer Jay Weinberg is going solo. Today (November 19th), Weinberg launched a new eponymous era with a debut single titled “Sandstone” — which also happens to feature guest screams from none other than Deafheaven vocalist George Clarke.
Weinberg teased the project on his socials yesterday (November 19th) through a nearly one-minute video clip of him performing a melancholic, arguably black-gazing build-up. Clarke is also in the vid swinging a mic cable, but doesn’t make a sound.
In an interview with Wall of Sound, Weinberg confirmed that “Sandstone,” which cuts a doomier cloth when heard in full, is the first part of a new collaborative series that will ultimately result in an EP release in 2026.
Weinberg performs guitar and drums on the song, which he says he’d been working on “between six and eight years.”
“Guitar is actually the instrument that I started with,” he added. “I started playing drums when I was 14, but I started playing guitar when I was nine, and that’s always been my primary writing instrument. Whenever I sit down to write stuff, it’s typically with a guitar first.
“And so I’ve thrown together different versions of what I would want to do with these songs, material I’ve written for a long, long time, and it just kind of started to make sense where I felt comfortable recording all the instruments myself, and then kind of pitching a song here or a song there to friends of mine.”
While details on forthcoming songs are slim, Weinberg did reveal that these will find him working alongside a number of vocalists. He added that creating alongside Clarke was “an absolute dream.”
“I’ve always wanted to collaborate with mainly vocalists and just create a very low pressure, like, ‘Hey, here’s a song…’ instead of… ‘oh, we got to start a side project.’
“In the instance of ‘Sandstone,’ I really felt like the music I was creating really lent itself to what my friend George Clark would be able to do with his voice and his lyrics, and I just kind pitched it to him like, ‘Hey, let’s do this one song.’”
As previously reported, Suicidal Tendencies released the “Adrenaline Addict” single earlier this year, which marked their first original studio recording with Weinberg behind the kit.
