Ahead of a stretch of massive summer stadium dates with Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age, post-hardcore vets Gouge Away have delivered their first new song in two years. Marking their debut for new label home Run for Cover Records, the distorted anthem is called “Figurine.”
The track is the first from the Oregon-by-way-of-Florida outfit since their Deep Sage album from 2024. The punchy, pop-storted track is also their first recording with guitarist Theo Hartlett (Ovlov, Pet Fox), who’d previously spent time with the band as a touring member. They wrote the tune last fall, and tracked it live-to-tape at Portland, Oregon’s Jackpot! Recording Studio.
Vocalist Christina Michelle explained in a statement that her screamed-and-sung lyrics were crafted last fall on tour, as she and the rest of the band were working out the arrangement on the road, and they reflect various childhood memories.
“Before the tour, I was digitizing home videos, having to see myself as a kid from an outside perspective,” she recalls. “I knew I was shy, a people-pleaser, and all these things, but it was different to watch it on film,” she says. “I was always afraid of disappointing people so I made myself small and rarely acted outside of this little box I found myself in.
“Instead of getting into trouble like most kids, I didn’t really break out of my comfort zone until much more recently. I thought I had to work really hard to be loved. I stretch myself so thin to please everyone else that it winds up being the expectation. I found people who love me, even when I am a messy trainwreck, and that toppled my entire reality. And yet, there’s still this little kid inside of me who is afraid of upsetting her parents.”
A music video for the track mainly features performance footage, but it also arrives with scenes of Michelle singing her song in a room full of melted clocks and a perma-moving floor — suggesting what it’d be like to get interior design tips from both Jamiroquai and Salvador Dali.
“Figurine” is streaming now. It’ll also be released on a limited 7-inch along with a vinyl-only cover of Swiss post-punk outfit Grauzone’s “Eisbär” on the flip. You can pre-order the vinyl here.
As previously reported, Gouge Away are set to open up for Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone age on a pair of west coast dates this summer. Ahead of that, they mount a North American tour with alt-country expanders Wednesday, which begins March 13th at Knoxville, Tennessee’s Mill & Mine venue.
