Hungry for more Ghost? Good news, for the occult-rock favorites — now steered by “Satanized” new vocalist Papa V Perpetua — have just unveiled a phantasmagoric SKELETÁ single called “Lachryma” for you to feast on. Tricky thing is, it seems like an in-song existential terror has an appetite of its own.
The new song was briefly previewed earlier in the week during an on-air broadcast from Washington, D.C.’s Elliot in the Morning show, where a snippet of the song revealed a synth-y intro, layers of Eighties-era Ozzy stompage, swirling gothic organs and more.
Lyrically, the tune has Papa V Perpetua hinting at vampiric behavior, a feeling of dread feasting upon you “in the middle of the night,” and plenty of crying (it’s worth noting here that “Lachryma” is the Latin word for “tear”).
Ghost’s clergy likewise issued an official message of their own vis-à-vis a very Seventies-horror-styled teaser trailer where a Mr. Movie Guy-voiced narrator warns of the impending “Lachryma”: “In the middle of the night, it feeds… you can never run, and you cannot hide.”
Now, Ghost’s newest song is available to be experienced in full, which you can do by giving its music video a stream up above. Fans disappointed by “Satanized”‘s pop tilt will likely be heartened by the latest single’s somewhat darker, doomier sound — though it does still ultimately burst into an exuberant sing-along chorus. As for the video, it finally gives the sinister, skull-masked Papa V Perpetua the proper introduction he deserves.
As previously reported, Ghost’s SKELETÁ , which follows 2022’s Impera, is described as the band’s “most unflinchingly introspective work to date,” with Perpetua’s lyricism said to present “distinct individual emotional vistas.”
