Coming off Foo Fighters’ unexpected, though long-in-the-works Minor Threat cover, Dave Grohl and Co. have now just delivered their first original song in two years. The heart-wrecked, but life-affirming rock ballad is titled “Today’s Song.”
The new song dropped this morning (July 2nd), in part to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of Foo Fighters’ self-titled debut (which had been released in the U.S. on July 4th, 1995).
“Today’s Song” begins gently with oscillated organ tones and crystal guitar chords, and a reflective tone from Grohl (“Today I woke screaming for a change”). A press release notes the tune features “lyrical themes of personal evolution and perseverance in the face of life’s uncertainty and the passage of time,” and it eventually ramps into the red with a three-quarter swing.
“Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat,” Grohl said in a statement, reflecting on the song and his band’s history. “We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.
“It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of [former drummer] William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of [former guitarist] Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of [former drummer] Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”
Grohl than added a tributary note to the late Taylor Hawkins, Foo Fighers’ longest tenured drummer who had passed away in 2022.
“And… Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”
“Today’s Song” is streaming now, and you can watch the lyric video up above. The song is the Foo’s first piece of original music since delivering their But Here We Are LP in 2023.
