You might’ve been loosely aware of Sol Invicto — Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter’s side project with Cypress Hill‘s Eric Bobo, producer-guitarist Richie Londres, and drummer Sikth drummer Dan Foord — these past few years, with the outfit having released music privately through their fan club. But as of today (November 8th), the group have formally entered the public sphere through the release of a debut EP titled Loosely Aware.
The independently-released three-song record had been teased in early October through “The Obvious Play,” a heavy track we praised for mixing “Carpenter’s detuned and doomy compound-judding” with dangerously pulsing electronic percussion and Plague to Pyres vocalist Sean Plague’s guest screams.
With respect to the other tracks, “Revelation of the Method” is a percussively drilled-out death march that showcases the wild-limbed freneticism of the recently joined Foord, while “Lost in Translation” revels in atmospheric synths, Eric Bobo’s hypnotic conga tapping, and psychedelically-twisted noise-djenting. Sol Invicto had previously issued the rare 2017 double album Initium — a collection of demos and experimental tracks — to members of their private club, Sol Invicto Comiti.
