That seemingly infinite wait for new Deafheaven music has finally come to an end. Four years on from the blackgaze adventurists’ Infinite Granite album, they’ve just announced a fifth full-length with the evocative name of Lonely People With Power. Though the album is due in March, they’re previewing the release ahead of time with a decidedly metallic frenzy called “Magnolia.”
“Magnolia” arrived on streamers today (January 27th), and it barrels out of the speakers as a bleak-and-blasted banger, at least before leaning towards a dark-swung groove. Vocalist George Clarke, meanwhile, screeches through a grief-stricken set of lyrics contemplating funereal scenes, “suicidal mania” and the “secrets we die with.”

As for Lonely People With Power, Deafheaven’s fifth longplayer was cut at Hollywood, California’s EastWest Studios with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (St. Vincent, M83) before being mixed by Zach Weeks (The Armed, Fuming Mouth).
The record follows the band’s Grammy-nominated Infinite Granite, and a press release suggests its 12 songs will “confound expectations” by “expanding stylistic boundaries.” Lonely People With Power likewise includes guest features by Boy Harsher’s Jae Matthews (“Incidental II”) and Interpol vocalist-guitarist Paul Banks (“Incidental III”).
Lonely People With Power is due out March 28th via the band’s new label, Roadrunner Records. An exclusive variant of the album on “Honeyed Heat”-colored vinyl, limited to 500 copies, can be found in Revolver‘s shop.
