Code Orange members Jami Morgan and Shade Balderose are pushing their production project NOWHERE2RUN to the forefront with an industrially-bruised new single that may be leading up to a larger release. Featuring extra vocals from Kadeem France of UK metal faction Loathe, their hard-thumped collab is called “Ant in the Afterbirth.”
The track itself is a lean-and-mean inkscape of chittering electronic percussion, synths that sound like digitized elephant cries, deadly nightshade guitar chording, and ultra-processed whispers and shouts. Lyrically, we’re hit with some metaphorical bleakness (“I am a slug in the sun”) and the forever sage, and somewhat ominous, maxim that you reap what you sow. Both Morgan and France take a crack at a verse. You can check it all out up above.
The arrival of “Ant in the Afterbirth” followed online teasing through NOWHERE2RUN’s Instagram account, which has been unfurling cryptic posts aplenty, including a missing persons-styled poster of Morgan and Balderose and a link to www.lostinthismaze.com, where you can apparently “submit any information regarding the disappearance.” It’s noted that the full site “opens” next Tuesday (October 15th), but you can also sign up to join a “search party”/Discord group for more info in the meantime.
In the past, Morgan and Baldersose’s NOWHERE2RUN guise had delivered animated visuals for Code Orange, including the band’s sci-fi dystopic “Autumn and Carbine” video from 2021.
Code Orange, meanwhile, have been relatively inactive in 2024 — the band canceled their spring tour over ongoing health issues with guitarist Dominic Landolina. Meanwhile, founding member Reba Meyers recently joined Marilyn Manson’s band. The shock rocker’s One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1 album is out November 22nd via Nuclear Blast.
