Hear CHAT PILE’s depraved new noise-rock rager “I Am Dog Now”

Bow down, for Chat Pile have returned from God’s Country.

Two years on from the release of the Oklahoman noise-rock nasties’ breakthrough debut LP, the band are back to sermonize the faithful through the biting “I Am Dog Now” — which acts as the first taste of their forthcoming sophomore LP, Cool World.

The new single, which you can check out through the video up above, is an irregularly lurching assault of guitar discomfort and hammered-hull drum hits. Raygun Busch’s lean, violence-gilded lyrics land beastly and depraved (“Destroyed nose/Unrepairable skin”).

Video director Will Mecca transforms the track into a Church-set horror tale told out of sequence. What you will see is a holy man’s teeth-gnashing performance from the pulpit for a devoted congregation, as well as his off-the-rails solo sermonizing within the bowels of what seems like a serial killer basement. His clothes and bible get torn and bloodied somewhere along the way.

“Will’s vision captures the essence of ‘I Am Dog Now’ by channeling his specific style of low-fi, exploitation cinema aesthetic into a dusty, religious bad-trip exclusive to the southern plains of America,” Chat Pile bassist Stin said in a statement. “Eagle-eyed viewers may actually notice shots of the literal chat piles from which we take our name.”

Cool World was mixed by Uniform’s Ben Greenberg, and is said to find the band building off their God’s Country fracas by mixing sludge and noise with “goth-tinged dirges” and “abrasive yet anthemic alt/indie-esque hooks.” Lyrically, the release is said to examine everyday malaise and the death of the globe.

Busch explained: “Cool World covers similar themes to our last album, except now exploded from a micro to macro scale, with thoughts specifically about disasters abroad, at home, and how they affect one another.”

Cool World is out October 11th via The Flenser. Chat Pile are set to support their sophomore LP the following month via a North American tour alongside Mamaleek, Agriculture and more.
