After a bit of ghostly teasing on their socials, Bad Omens have officially begun their next era by delivering a haunting new single titled “Specter.”
The metalcore expansionists piqued frenzied fan interest late last month with a social post featuring the caption “goodbye, friend” — a slogan they’ve been using in various posts since 2024 — and a recording featuring droning atmospherics and an effects-warped monologue full of cryptic phrases such as “do you feel love?”
Then, Bad Omens uploaded a pair of cinematic vignettes where a psychiatrist (played by Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead actor Ryan Hurst) grills a little kid wearing a bedsheet ghost costume about some mysterious events, and why he’s hiding behind a mask. The lil specter is not receptive to the questioning, but finds he can’t quite escape the session.
Now, we can piece it all together a bit more through the unveiling of the full single and video. The song —which follows Bad Omens’ 2024 CONCRETE JUNGLE [THE OST] expansion pack and Noah Sebastian’s more-recent Kansas cover with Corey Taylor — finds the band upping the drama, initially teeing things up with soft and shadowy production before building up towards stronger electronics and a dynamic chorus featuring the teased “do you feel love?” line.
As for the video, directed by Sebastian and NICO, it’s a creepy, big-screen-ready mini-movie that evokes the psychological horror of M. Night Shyamalan and Ari Aster. Watch and listen above.
It has yet to be revealed whether “Specter” is a standalone single or part of an upcoming album — which would mark Bad Omens’ first proper full-length release since their breakthrough LP, 2022’s THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND.
Either way, it’s now time to speculate on whether the band will bring “Specter” to the stage this year when they hit the Louder Than Life and Aftershock festivals this fall.
