Metalcore veterans Atreyu have arisen to deliver their first original song in two years, which they’ve given the mortality-minded title of “Dead.”
Though the group delivered their covers-heavy The Pronoia Sessions in 2024, “Dead” marks the band’s first in-house composition since 2023’s The Beautiful Dark of Life project. They’d teased the single with some requiescat-ing socials posts, which had fans wondering whether Atreyu were set to announce their breakup. Turns out the rumors of their death were greatly exaggerated.
This latest cut begins with a bit of guitar ambiance before blistering into a panicked melodeath tempo and metallically melodic guitar harmonizing. Lyrically, it takes a morbid look at the impact we have on others (“How would you feel if I were to die tonight?”) and our lasting legacies (“Will you carry on just the same?”)
“‘Dead’ asked the question [we] feel many ask,” the band wrote in a joint statement. “‘Do I matter? Would anyone actually notice if I was gone?’ Not speaking in the space of depression or suicidal thought, but more in the grand scheme of life.
“We all want and aspire to leave some sort of lasting legacy or impression, but do we really matter? I guess we all hope so.”

The band will likewise contemplate their legacy on the upcoming “20 + 1 year Anniversary Tour,” which celebrates the band’s beloved 2004 debut, The Curse. The trip takes off in November, and you can see the tour route down below.
