Foo Fighters made a surprise return to the stage over the weekend, marking the alt-rock icons’ first show in a year, and likewise the debut performance from their new drummer, Ilan Rubin.
After having teased their weekend plans through some cryptic Instagram fit-checks, they formally announced their Saturday night (September 13th) appearance at San Luis Obispo, California’s Fremont Theater — their first public performance since the summer of 2024.
The 25-song set began with One by One’s classically chugging “All My Life,” with the Foos then cascading through several eras of their decades-spanning catalogue. This included a handful of songs from their 1995 self-titled debut album, from “This is a Call” and “Wattershed,” to the first performance of “Alone + Easy Target” since 2018, and the return of “Exhausted,” which they’d last played in 2014.
Other deep cuts included One by One’s “Have It All,” which hadn’t made an appearance in a Foos setlist since 2015, while big hits included “Times Like These,” “My Hero,” “Learn to Fly,” “Monkey Wrench,” and “Everlong.”
They also hit “Rescued” from 2023’s But Here We Are LP, but didn’t dip into their most recent single, this summer’s contemplative “Today’s Song.”
The night marked Rubin’s first show behind the kit with the band, following his departure from Nine Inch Nails (famously, Josh Freese — the Foos’ last drummer — is now back to drumming with NIN).
“After keeping my head down for a couple wild months and throwing myself into the material, that first show was such an incredible release of energy,” Rubin wrote in an Instagram post after the show. “I’ve been taken aback by all the positivity and support, and I just wanted to say thanks! Excited for all the volume and sweat that lies ahead.”

Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl suggested to the crowd that they are planning on performing more surprise shows in the future, and have “tricks up our fuckin’ sleeves.”
