From multiple mind-bogglingly massive festival lineups, to the waves of heavy favorites filling arenas, to the underground vets and rising stars crushing it on the club circuit, 2025 offered plenty of sick live experiences across these past 12 months.
It was a year of grand returns — from industrial titans peeling into arenas after a multi-year gap, to sludge icons reemerging from a boggy abyss to hit the stage for the first time in decades. Occult-rock favorites brought an enigmatic new frontman to the mic, while a beloved alt-metal institution united genres and generations at their annual blowout.
But who put on the best show in 2025? We asked Revolver readers to put the spotlight on the best onstage act at the moment, and they responded accordingly.
Nine Inch Nails
Trent Reznor and longtime co-conspirator Atticus Ross spent the past several years honing their tandem as film scorers. And, indeed, that continued in 2025 via the much-anticipated soundtrack for Disney sci-fi flick TRON: Ares.
What whipped fans into an even frothier frenzy, however, was the concept of seeing Nine Inch Nails on their first live tour since 2022. The band’s global “Peel It Back” trek found Reznor and Co. bouncing between a pair of stages each night, while the set lists specialized in cuts from all across NIN’s canon — including the live debut of TRON banger “As Alive As You Need Me to Be
— some presented in remix form with Boys Noize.
We needed NIN back onstage, and seeing them live in 2025 was one of the year’s greatest joys.
Ghost
No one really knew what to expect out of Ghost when Papa Emeritus IV retired from frontman duties at the end of 2023. Except, maybe, that they’d still put on a hell of a show, no matter who manned the mic.
When the Swedish occult-rockers re-emerged in early 2025 to start promoting this year’s stellar SKELETÁ, they brought with them a new, sartorial, semi-skull-masked and sometimes bat-winged belter names Papa V Perpetua, and he’s been bringing the house down each night of the band’s “Skeletour” — whether crooning through new tunes like “Satanized” or oldies-but-goodies off Opus Eponymous.
Ghost also notably prohibited cellphones at their gigs, making the experience all the more focused and transportive. No wonder Revolver named them the Live Band of the Year.
Gojira
Gojira hit cities like a kaiju unleashed all throughout 2025 — whether bruising through tunes on festival stages, linking up with Korn for a Canadian trek, or closing out the year with their European headline tour.
They naturally displayed great fortitude no matter the stage or circumstance — even after vocalist-guitarist Joe Duplantier was forced into undergoing minor hand surgery in the fall following an undisclosed injury, the French metal faves still mounted their year-end tour undeterred.
Their friend Greg Kubacki (whose latest explosive EP with technical mathcore mainstays Car Bomb was co-produced by Duplantier) filled in to hit some of those monster riffs in the bandleader’s stead, and they didn’t miss a beat.
Deftones
When Deftones kicked off their first North American arena run of 2025, the Sactown alt-metal icons had yet to let us in on their private music.
As the year went on, though, Chino Moreno and Co. began introducing nouveau insta-classics like “my mind is a mountain,” “milk of the madonna” and “infinite source” into the set list alongside their greatest hits. And they fit right in.
Bonus points to Deftones for not only mounting multiple successful arena runs, but also yet another Dia De Los Deftones festival — which saw the tastemakers gracefully putting the shine on Deafheaven, Clipse, Ecca Vandal, Glare and many more.
Sleep Token
Well… we guess this is what Sleep Token get for tryna hide in the limelight: the No. 1 poll spot here as the top live act of 2025.
Considering Sleep Token’s Even in Arcadia produced record-busting numbers when it arrived in the spring, it’s no surprise that plenty of Tokenites were desperate to see new tunes like “Damocles,” “Caramel” and “Look to Windward” up close.
Vessel and the rest of the band leveled up the production with new costumes and a stage design that looked as if Sleep Token were performing their newest tunes from within the mystical ancient ruins of Arcadia itself.
Following multiple sell-out performances — and despite some of Vessel’s lyrical worries — Revolver readers confirmed that Sleep Token kept killing the game. Night in, night out.
