Though Dying Wish’s new Flesh Stays Together album arrived in full today (September 26th), the Portland, Oregon-based quintet have separated heavy track “I Don’t Belong Anywhere” off from the pack via a new, confrontational music video.
The beginning of the song mixes ultra-gross, super-detuned riffage with one of Emma Boster’s most melodic in-song sections yet — the singer pushing her pipes through visceral lines on hate, cowardice, defiance and conflict (“If you refuse me you become my perfect enemy”). From there, the band become a battering ram of metalcore destructivity.
Fittingly enough, the music video — once again co-directed by Eric Richter and Dying Wish guitarist Pedro Carillo — mixes rage-room aesthetics, broken-home allusions and performance footage. Bookcases get smashed, flower pots go flying, and it all ends in a pillow feathers-flying melee.
“This video depicts what I think every human on this planet feels like currently. It’s a fucking pressure cooker of bullshit we’re in and it’s only a matter of time before we all explode,” Boster explains in a statement.
She adds: “The smoke and mirrors have faded. We are all under the microscope of those who ‘know’ our best interest in this country. We put on a fake smile everyday just to get through the perils of being alive. When being alive has become a chore, when just existing has become impossible, we as a society have failed. We are a product of all their failures. So, let them deal with it now.”
