Deftones seem to be teasing the arrival of new music — “private music,” if you will.
The cryptic semi-announcement was made last night (June 29th) at the alt-metal veterans’ gig London, UK’s Crystal Palace Park. Both before and after the show, a graphic was thrown up onto the screens that featured the words “private music,” a copyright notice roman-numeral-ed as “X.VII.MMXXV,” and a mention that this was going to be “distributed by deftones, all rights reserved.”
Now, depending on whether you’re a day-month-year person or a month-day-year, the tease could be suggesting that new Deftones music is out July 10th or perhaps October 7th. No further info has been profferred at this point.
That said, Deftones have been hinting at a follow-up to 2020’s Ohms for a while, now, with guitarist Stephen Carpenter having said back in 2023 that the group were working with producer Nick Raskulinecz. Last year, Carpenter added that the new material “sounds like a continuation of Ohms and Koi [No Yokan].”
Deftones are currently out on the road for a series of European shows, wrapping things up July 6th at Turku, Finland’s Rusirock fest.
As previously reported, Deftones will next kick off a North American headline tout on August 22nd at Vancouver, BC’s Rogers Arena. Those concerts will feature Barbarians of California, Phantogram and IDLES on select dates.
