Chelsea Wolfe is giving us life today (June 23rd) by delivering not one but two new singles — her first new songs since last year’s “Mean” collaboration with HEALTH.
First up is “Death is Not the End,” a transformatory track that begins with lithe piano musings and a contemplative, existentially curious and gently whispered vocal from Wolfe (“I keep hoping death is like the ocean /And I’m floating”), but erupts into a soul-exploding kaboom of mood-rock guitars.
The track finds Wolfe and longtime collaborator Ben Chisolm working alongside former Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck and session drummer Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos, Fiona Apple). A lush, ocean-set music video for the song can be found up above.
“The Dark” similarly begins airily, all acoustic finger-plucking and angelically echo-blown vocals. It also delivers an explosive finale. Wolfe and Chisolm are joined on the track by drummer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Courtney Barnett) and bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Air, Beck). An audio player for the track is down below.
Both songs tease Wolfe’s in-the-works ninth album, which will be the follow-up to 2024’s She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She. The as-yet-undetailed project will be issued through Loma Vista.
The double-single also arrives following some cryptic socials posts connecting Wolfe to Heretic Parfum. It’s now been confirmed that the musician is part of a campaign with the scent-makers. Wolfe has teamed up with the company for GHOSTS, a collection of “five spectral fragrances.” More info on the fragrances can be found here.
