Following a staggering pair of Chelsea Wolfe singles from earlier in the summer, the veteran songstress has conjured up another gothic stunner in the form of “Cold” — and all three tracks are now formally confirmed to be part of her upcoming ninth solo full-length, The Dark.
The new song begins as a muted folk-strummer, Wolfe’s vibrant and pensive vibrato finds her in a state of transition (“I’m letting you go”) while vibing alongside off-in-the-distance layers of piano, acoustic guitar and brushed snarework. Wolfe’s vocals echo loudly out of the abyss as the song progresses (“Crying underwater/screaming at the surface”) during an emotionally resonant chorus.
“Cold” has also been fit with a video where Wolfe and some friends begin a séance. Communing with another plane leads to supernatural results, their candle lit rituals leading to possessive moments and, perhaps, the most towering on-screen image of Wolfe to date.
As for The Dark, which had previously been teased by its title track and “Death Is Not the End,” the album finds Wolfe communing with longtime collaborator Ben Chisolm, new songwriting partner Jennifer Decilveo, and musical guests including Nine Inch Nails live guitarist Robin Finck, session drummer Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos, Fiona Apple), the members of Kaelan Mikla and more.
A press release explains that the album, which follows 2024’s She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, finds Wolfe “saying goodbye to various relationships, aspects of identity, and perhaps most importantly, patterns of self-abandonment.” It’s reportedly about “embracing the unknown,” and letting go of the past.
“The ghosts are haunted by the living just as much as the living are haunted by the ghosts,” Wolfe says in a statement. “On this album, I’m not pointing the finger at anyone. I’m taking responsibility. Someone who may have been a toxic presence in my life.. maybe I was bad for them, too. It’s ok to move away from these types of connections that only seem to cause confusion for both parties, after a long stretch of trying to work it out.”
The Dark is out August 21st via Loma Vista, though a vinyl pre-order on “Gold Forest” wax (limited to 500) is currently available in Revolver’s shop.
