Canadian hardcore/sludge act Minors brought the filthy, raging heat with their most recent record Abject Bodies, and now with a video for single “Meanderist,” they’re bringing a bit of the uncanny to ratchet up the intensity of the song’s swirling, untamed ire.
Set between two scenes, a raucous house performance and a faceless man’s walk on the beach while dragging a shovel, the clip sets a mysterious air from the jump. As the show portion grows in power and energy, the man walking stumbles upon the spot where he wants to dig. He plunges the shovel into the ground, the scene becoming blurrier and more abstract as the sliced-in house show shots becoming more off-kilter, he finally happens upon a head wrapped like that of a mummy.
Reaching down into the hole to try to remove the found head, his hands plunge into what now appears to be a pool of black ooze. The faceless man then lets his hands stay submerged in a nauseating puddle of unknown goo before pulling them out in a confused, dejected manner. The onstage antics have cooled now, with the band winding down their revved-up showing as the song comes to a close.
“‘Meanderist’ is about walking the wrong path in life,” explains Minors vocalist Jesse Knight. “Following in someone’s footsteps, but realizing that the person you’re following isn’t who you thought they were.”
