It’s often said that you’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar. It’s a credo Atlanta, Georgia, rock trio Dropsonic apparently live by, as they now have a new single called “Honeytrap” in which they landed a vocal guest spot from Alice in Chains’ William DuVall, a guy who obviously knows his way around a Jar of Flies.
The new tune comes from Dropsonic’s forthcoming self-titled album, their first in 15 years and one that a press release promises includes “mega riffs, scorching guitar solos, and three-piece tightness.”
With “Honeytrap,” they hit a dark and doomy, but undeniably groovy tone akin to peak Queens of the Stone Age. The band’s Dan Dixon takes the lead behind the mic, but DuVall — who also co-produced the record — gets in a few good lines along the way.
“William is a longtime friend who understands what Dropsonic is about and someone whose opinion I fully respect. So, when I wanted someone outside the band to keep me honest or let me know if I’m veering off of the path, Will was my first and only call,” Dixon said in a statement, adding how DuVall “was the perfect sounding board and advisor throughout the process.”
“Dan had been sending the songs as works in progress for me to weigh in. Then he invited me to the studio,” DuVall explains of his guest spot. “I heard the background vocal part for ‘Honeytrap’ immediately. We laid it down in just a few minutes. But the real joy was spending the day watching Dan work and getting a behind-the-mic view of a Dropsonic album being made. They’re simply one of the best rock bands to come out of America in the last thirty years.
Dropsonic’s latest single can be heard up above. The band’s upcoming album, which follows 2010’s VI, explores “thematic questions surrounding desperation, drugs, love, narcissism and money,” and sees release May 16th via Spartan Records.
