According to NBC Los Angeles, one person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting during a death-metal concert in San Bernardino Saturday night (April 23rd). The gunfire broke out around 9:30 p.m. at local bar and venue the Marquis Lounge while the Los Angeles band Crawling Through Tartarus were playing, with vocalist Matt Holzboog reportedly hit by two rounds and subsequently undergoing surgery. The victim who died has been identified as 32-year-old James Vincent Dickson of San Bernardino, per CBS News. Three of the others who were hit were transported to local area hospitals, while a fourth self-transported. On Monday, police said all four of those victims were in stable condition.
Matt Berg, an apparent friend of the band, shared an update on Facebook Monday: “Prayers for my boys in Crawling Through Tartarus after a violent shooting during their set. … Matt was hit by two rounds and is dealing with surgeries now. Make sure you send lots of love their way.” See his full post, which includes a photo from the hospital, below.
Crawling Through Tartarus provided their own update via Instagram story Tuesday. “[Holzboog] had his second surgery this morning that lasted 3 hours, and it went really well,” said the person who appeared to be Holzboog’s wife. “There was talk about needing a third surgery in the future.”
She added, “The doctor [said] how fast everyone reacted to help Matthew made a huge difference on him not losing his leg Saturday night.”
According to local news reports, police are still investigating the matter, and no suspect or motive information was available.
