Dance Gavin Dance is a Sacramento-based band that delivers emo-leaning and thrashing anthems despite a frequently changing lineup led by Matt Mingus (drums) and Will Swan (vocals and lead guitar). Since their debut in 2006, the band has climbed the charts steadily and found mainstream success in the middle of 2010.
A decade into their career, Dance Gavin Dance released Mothership, which landed at number 13 on the Billboard 200. Artificial Selection, their 2018 follow-up, also performed quite well, landing at number 15. Another album, Afterburner, was released in 2020, and after more lineup changes, they released Jackpot Juicer in 2022.
The band’s original members included Mingus, Swan, Jonny Craig (vocals), Sean O’Sullivan (guitars), and Eric Lodge (bass). Downtown Battle Mountain was released in 2007 after they remastered and re-released Whatever I Say is Royal Ocean the year prior.
Kris Crummett contributed to Downtown Battle Mountain, the band’s first full-length album. By then, Craig had also left the band and was briefly replaced by Kurt Travis. Lodge and Mess also returned to the band and brought along Josh Benton. Craig also made a quick return and relieved Travis of his vocal duties.
In 2009, Dance Gavin Dance released Happiness, their fourth album. After a lineup change, the band released Downtown Battle Mountain II. After that, the band released Acceptance Speech, their sixth album. Despite more lineup changes, the band released Instant Gratification, their seventh studio album, in 2015.
In 2016, Dance Gavin Dance released Tree City Sessions, their second live album. The live album included materials from each of their previous albums. Mothership featured the singles Care and Son of a Robot. Afterburner, their tenth studio album, had guest appearances from Marc Okubo and Zachary Garren.
Their third live album, Tree City Sessions 2, was released in 2020. Unfortunately, the first half of 2022 has been tumultuous for the band, with the sudden death of their bassist Tim Feerick and the departure of their then-vocalist. Both contributed to Jackpot Juicer, which was released in July 2022.
